This selection of shopfront photographs has been in the making over a number of years. Exploring the small lanes of France via obscure and remote villages often provided the source of my subject matter. Surprises would suddenly catch my eye. Perhaps one old shop amongst a line of newer ones. We stop the car and start making new pictures, trophies, like hunting. A shopfront with the hand painted signage is an exciting find, especially when surrounded with peeling paintwork, shuttered windows …. This speaks of the fading history, the bustle that might have been, the windows brimming with tempting cakes, breads, gifts, hardwares, tools …. All inviting passersby to come in and buy … and then what happened ….
